[method of generation for nervous find, dye hen fed:]
the three portrait images were re-sized to approximate each other in head size. the images were then cropped to be 8cm wide x 10cm long. the size of the cube that determined each fragment of image was 2cm, thus each portrait gave 20 image fragments. in total there were 60 image fragments, plus 20 letters from the title, which left one blank space in a square comprised of 81 image fragments: a 9 x 9 square.
the order of the image fragments and letters were chance generated, in the old fashion way. 81 pieces of small paper, representing each square, were put in a box and pulled out one by one. the orientation of the image fragment and letters was also chance generated. the corner of each cube was assigned a compass direction. 4 pieces of paper, with north, south, east and west written on them were pulled from a box and would thus decide which corner was going to face “up”.
the composition method represents the continued and ongoing influence of jackson mac low, and should be considered his progeny.
